What is the first thing that you should do when you decide to start and do your own game? Yeh, beside watch tons of YouTube videos to have at least an idea regarding what you are about to do.. You have to choose a Game Engine!
For wikipedia, a game engine is a software framework primarily designed for the development of video games and generally includes relevant libraries and support programs such as a level editor.
The “only” problem is: which one should you choose?
This of course might depends about the games you would like to develop but generally speaking, nothing is better than try them, try them all and see which one is good for you, which one makes more sense to you - spoiler alert: to me was the Godot Engine but it took me some time to decide.
I started with Unity, moved to Godot, then Defold, all engines that anyway require the knowledge of a programming language.
When I was trying them, sometimes I felt really lost with the coding, especially while I was watching tutorials and replicate them, I realized I was only copy/pasting what the tutorials were telling me to do, I did not really understand why I was doing what and that pulled me down, so I moved on and tried the so called “code-free” engines.
Then I tried Game Maker, Construct 3, RPG Maker, GDevelop and for one reason or another, I still had Godot in the back of my mind, after testing all these engines, I was always coming back there, to try and redo what I did in those engine, to see the differences, what I preferred, and I always preferred the way of Godot.
In the moment everything was clear to me, I had to start to study properly and focus on Godot.
So here I am now, studying Godot, GDScript and sharing my experience and accomplishment with you, hoping to be helpful.
